re-trace [part 1]

‘re-trace [part 1]‘, takes place in the grounds of the Château Grand Boise vineyard in Trets, Bouches-du-Rhône.The work proposes a triadic relationship of performance, painting and film, and centers on a five metre wide by two metre high outdoor canvas placed at the Château’s pond area, situated in front of Mount Aurélien. The artist choreographs a series of movements inspired by the landscape. She dons a ‘Camera tracing mechanism’ – hand-crafted from raw cotton and galvanised steel – which houses a digital camera at the back.

She simultaneously paints while enacting the performance, ‘tracing’ the landscape with her body. The camera on her back records the effects of her movements, at the same time ‘projecting’ a conceptual reflection of the landscape back onto itself.

‘re-trace [part 1]‘ explores poignant themes of gesture between the artist’s body and its environment. In effect, the work offers ideas of fluidity and play in contrast to the monolithic peaks of Mount Aurélien and the imposing verdure of the Château’s surrounding forests.
